Getting started

Wholly Honey started with a Intro to Beekeeping class in 2016. We learned some basics about the honey bee and how a beehive works. Everyone got into a beekeeping suit and we opened some hives and took a look at the bees and their home. It was so interesting that we decided to look into getting some bees of our own.

We knew that we had a lot to learn so we started researching on the web about everything from where to get the equipment to where the bees would be the safest and most productive. We located a meadow in Grand Prairie where we could keep our hives and met some other beekeepers in the area. One recommended that we take a class offered by Christi Baughman at BeeGirl.biz.

Her 5 class series covered everything a beginner might need to know to get started. We covered equipment, disease control, installing packaged bees, or a NUC. There was a class at her apiary where we got to open the hives and find the queen. Actually handling the bees and their hive equipment was very useful. It really helped reduce the anxiety about handling our own bees when they arrived. I highly recommend a class of this type to anyone considering or just starting to keep bees.
